Welcome to Sussex Surgery
Sussex Surgery is an on-line medical educational resource originally created in 2006 by Mr Etienne Moore, a specialist consultant general surgeon working in Brighton and Sussex in the South East of England in the United Kingdom (UK). Sussex Surgery is now one of the longest established specialist medical information websites in the world, written by experts who still regularly see and treat patients and who also teach and train the next generation of doctors and allied healthcare professionals.

Consultant Surgeon Profile by Mr Etienne Moore
My main professional interests are in keyhole laparoscopic surgery (hernias, gallbladders, bowel resections, adhesions), general surgery, skin surgery, colorectal (bowel and anus) surgery and endoscopy (colonoscopy and gastroscopy). You can click on the words or 'definitions' tab for further explanations.
I commonly investigate and treat people with skin lumps and bumps, rectal bleeding, hernias, gallstones, haemorrhoids, pilonidal disease, anal problems, bowel cancer, bowel polyps, abdominal pain and change in bowel habit.
I consult and operate regularly at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton and the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath), the Nuffield Health Brighton Hospital in Woodingdean, North Brighton, East Sussex and the Spire Montefiore Hospital in Hove, East Sussex.
I also enjoy teaching and training doctors and allied health professionals and I participate in the education of medical students at Brighton and Sussex Medical School.
I am a member of the anal and bowel cancer (also called colorectal cancer) and SPEC (significant polyp and early cancer) multi-disciplinary team at Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals.
I am the anal cancer surgery lead providing a tertiary referral service for specialist anal cancer surgery.
I also provide a tertiary referral service for the highly specialist and complex keyhole laparoscopic operations of TAMIS (transanal minimally invasive surgery), TEMS (transanal endoscopic microsurgery), ELAPE (extralevator abdominoperineal excision) and TATME (transanal total mesorectal excision).
Website Goals
In my day-to-day practice I discuss many different medical conditions with patients, students, doctors, nurses and allied health professionals. I wanted to provide a free and easy way of revisiting this advice so I created www.sussexsurgery.com linked with www.brightonsurgeon.com and www.etiennemoore.com, which anyone can read at their leisure.
I would like to offer this website free to anyone searching for information about general surgery, hernia surgery, gallstone surgery, colorectal surgery, colonoscopy, gastroscopy, haemorrhoid surgery or laparoscopic, keyhole or minimal access surgery. Click on the word that you are interested in or the 'medical information' tab to gain access to the information that I regularly tell patients in my clinic. The medical information section contains advice about how patients can help themselves with anus, bowel and abdominal problems before resorting to a specialist consultation or medical intervention.
I have also created this website to provide free easily accessible information for medical or other students and trainee doctors and surgeons. Students and trainee doctors and surgeons are welcome to browse this website and they should click on the 'trainee info' tab for relevant information and Mr Moore's medical education articles. Click here for Mr Moore's firm timetable for medical students or his timetable for RSCH Foundation doctors or his timetable for PRH CT core surgical trainee doctors or his timetable for Specialist Trainees or Trust Registrars. Please note that all timetables are subject to change as the hospital surgical service evolves with time.
